Wakkanai Hokusei Gakuen University, abbreviated as Wakhok University, is a leading university in the northernmost city of Japan, Wakkanai. We offer various  study programs under the Faculty of Integrated Media, Department of Integrated Media. We focus on gaining comprehensive creative knowledge that ensure our graduates are well-prepared to address complex contemporary issues we are facing locally as well as globally.

History and Philosophy

Wakkanai Hokusei Gakuen University (WAKHOK) was founded as a junior college in 1987 on the wish of Wakkanai citizens and people in northern Hokkaido, “higher educational institution in Soya region”.  In 2000, we established the first Information Media Faculty in Japan and moved to a four-year university.  Since its inception, people in Wakkanai and surrounding areas gave great support.

Based on the history of its establishment, Wakkanai Hokusei Gakuen University (WAKHOK) has a principle “to foster people who contribute to the local community, value people’s freedom and dignity underlying Christian spirit and love peace (Article 1, University Regulations)”.  In this light, we are conducting education and research activities aiming to develop human resources with practical skills that can respond promptly to the flow of global information and advanced academic knowledge that contributes to the development of local culture.  Besides we aim to be a university that bears responsibility for the sustainable development of the local community, and that is open to the public as the core of the community.
